Before taking up the reins of the new company, Jean-François Chalifoux headed up SSQ Insurance for 5 years. During this time, SSQ Insurance became one of the biggest insurance companies in Canada, with $13 billion in assets under management, consolidated insurance premiums of $2.5 billion, over 3 million clients, and more than 2,000 employees.
An inspiring leader, Mr. Chalifoux occupied a number of executive positions in both general and personal insurance at large Canadian insurance companies. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society and a graduate of the Queen’s Executive Development Program. He also holds a B.Sc. in actuarial sciences from Université Laval.
Since the beginning of his career, Mr. Chalifoux has sat on numerous boards and committees in the insurance and financial services industry as well as being socially involved. For example, he is currently the chair of the board of directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA/ACCAP) for 2020-2021. In November 2019, he was elected president of Centre de développement en assurances et services financiers (CDASF), better known as Puissance Onze – Québec Lévis. He also is a member of the board of directors of Fédération québécoise de ski acrobatique and will co-chair the 2020 Centraide campaign.
As a father of three boys, Mr. Chalifoux puts a strong emphasis on family life.
Pierre Marc Bellavance
Initially a litigation lawyer, Pierre Marc Bellavance joined the insurance industry in 2006. He has served as Vice President of Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary at La Capitale for the past ten years.
He has also taught at the Quebec Bar for many years. He earned his law degree at Université Laval in 1993. He went on to earn a joint master’s degree in public law from Université Laval and the University of Bordeaux. He is also a certified corporate director.
Patrick Cyr has served as Senior Vice President of Finance at SSQ Insurance since 2011. He also played a major role in the La Capitale/SSQ Insurance merger of equals from the very beginning. He has 25 years’ experience at SSQ Insurance and an in-depth knowledge of the organization and its workings. He has held several management positions in various parts of the company and has overseen numerous major projects.
Patrick Cyr studied at Université Laval. He holds bachelor’s degrees in business administration and accounting. He also holds the professional designations of Chartered Accountant (CA) and Associate of LOMA Society (ACS). He belongs to the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec (CPA – CA) and was named a Fellow of the Order in 2019.
Over the past 10 years, Catherine Desgagnés-Belzil held strategic IT positions in Quebec’s public service. More recently, she served as senior information manager, assistant digital transformation secretary, and head of Centre québécois d’excellence numérique.
Catherine Desgagnés-Belzil earned a bachelor’s in business computing at Université Laval.
Christian Fournier has been working in the insurance industry for over 25 years. He has been a vice president at La Capitale since 2013 and at the time of the merger of equals, served as Senior Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer.
A graduate of Université Laval and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society, Christian Fournier has held numerous strategic positions in Quebec and Canada in the property and casualty insurance industry. His in-depth knowledge of the business field, his penchant for innovation, his strategic thinking, as well as his leadership oriented towards accountability are vectors of success for the company.
Mélissa Gilbert has been Executive Vice President, Finance, Corporate Actuarial and Risk Management at La Capitale since December 2018. She has also played a key role in the La Capitale/SSQ Insurance merger of equals since the beginning. She previously served as chief financial officer and filled strategic positions in service companies. She notably worked in Western Canada.
Mélissa Gilbert received the relève d’excellence 2012 award from Réseau HEC, the Arista Jeune cadre du Québec award from the Jeune Chambre de Commerce de Montréal in 2015, and was a finalist in the emerging financial executive category of the FEI Canada Aces of Finance competition in 2017. She is also a certified corporate director (CCD) and a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CA).
Stéphane Morency has 25 years of experience in strategy and customer-centric transformation within large organizations, mainly in the insurance field. Until recently, he was leading the client transformation of a major financial institution where he worked for 15 years. He has had the opportunity, through various positions, to lead sectors such as strategic planning, marketing, digital, business intelligence, innovation, projects, actuarial, customer experience, etc. Prior to that, he worked in strategy consulting with executive teams of large corporations, initially in Europe and then in Canada. He was a partner in a strategy consulting firm where he was responsible for the strategic planning practice.
Throughout his career, Stéphane Morency had an impact on organizations, from strategy to implementation, so that they can refocus on their customers and develop the competitive advantages necessary for their success and sustainability. A well-known strategist, he also masters the key areas necessary for customer centricity such as marketing and digital. He was named a marketing visionary by Infopresse in 2019.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Management from Laval University and a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from McGill University.
Previously Vice President Customer Experience, Partners and Operations Management in the personal insurance and financial services sector at La Capitale, Lara Nourcy also served as a director in a large financial services group. She has 25 years’ experience in the insurance industry.
Lara Nourcy is a people-centered manager who throughout her career has combined a commitment to achieving ambitious business goals and a sincere concern for people and their development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in actuarial sciences from Université Laval.
A seasoned manager, Martin Robert has worked at SSQ Insurance for the past ten years. He served as Vice President of Talent, Culture and Communication. He has over 25 years’ experience in human resources management and labor relations. Martin Robert puts particular emphasis on cultural shift, human issues, work-life balance, and healthy lifestyles in his work.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in labor relations and is a member of Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés (CRHA).
Éric Trudel has served as Senior Vice President of Institutional Services and recently as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Product Management at SSQ Insurance, where he has chalked up over 25 years of experience. He has acquired a broad cross-cutting vision of the company’s activities and the insurance industry as a whole.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in actuarial sciences from Université Laval and has taken numerous professional development courses at Queen’s University. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
